The Chihuahuan Desert

The desert ecosystem is one of the most fragile on Earth. Summer temperatures commonly exceed 40° C, while the average annual rainfall is a scant 20 cm. While plants and animals fight to survive in these extreme conditions of temperature and dryness, human activity easily causes irreversible damage to the ecosystem.
