Diversity

The sedimentary rocks near Saltillo contain an incredible diversity of fossil organisms. They contain the remains of crocodiles, marine turtles, fish, sharks, crabs, clams, fresh water snails, insects, ammonites, corals, seaweed, coprolites (fossilized excrement), trunks of trees, palm fronds, leaves and fruit. The study of these fossils allows us to reconstruct the environment in which the dinosaurs lived during the Cretaceous Period, a time when this was the northeast cost of Mexico.

Preserved in these Mexican rocks is one of the greatest stories of humankind's shared heritage of life on planet Earth. This great paleontological importance makes the mountain ranges of southeastern Coahuila a geologic monument worthy of protection.
